Two children are being hailed as heroes after they shot and killed their mother's boyfriend, Stephen Kelley, after they allegedly witnessed him choking their mom, police in North Carolina said.
The 12-year-old fetched a gun and gave it to his 15-year-old sister who shot at Kelley, 46, striking him twice in the chest.
The police said another of Nierman’s children, a 16-year-old girl, was grazed by a bullet fragment as she stood nearby, but was treated and released for the slight injury.
Prosecutors are not pressing charges saying the shooting was "justified". Their names are not being officially released because of their age.
The police said:
Kelley had "assaulted Nierman and fired multiple rounds from a firearm inside the residence to threaten and terrorize Nierman", investigators said.
