His partner, Petra Windmeisser, tried to help by pulling him to safety away from the window by the legs during the gory attack.

The blood-thirsty animal eventually let go after Hardy poked it in the eye while under attack

Petrified Petra told The Namibian:
"The struggle went on for some minutes until Hardy eventually managed to stick his fingers into the leopard's eye, which caused it to let go. Then I managed to pull him back inside."
"There was blood everywhere and he was bleeding profusely. I tried to stop the bleeding and at the same time made a phone call from our satellite phone to the emergency services to come save us. There was no reception and he was losing a lot of blood."
The leopard continued to lurk around the van for over five hours until they were rescued to the hospital by a passing tourist lodge worker.
Hardy was left with deep wound to the neck, wound to the shoulders, arms and a shredded scalp.

They were taken to the Welwitschia Private Hospital who had been alerted by the rescuer to be ready for severely injured Hardy, who went straight in for emergency surgery for his horrific injuries.

He's reportedly in a critical but stable condition.
