Man beats his mum to death two days after being released from Prison after 30-year murder sentence

Two days after completing a 30-year prison sentence for a 1984 murder conviction, a New Jersey man allegedly killed his 64-year-old mother.
On Wednesday, Steven Pratt, 47, pleaded guilty to manslaughter, admitting his role in his mother's beating death, police say.

A statement from prosecutors obtained by PEOPLE confirms Pratt, an Atlantic City resident who lived with his mother, repeatedly struck his mother Gwendolyn Pratt in the head the morning of Oct. 12, 2014. Police responded to the Pratt home that morning and found Gwendolyn's lifeless body inside.

The statement says officers immediately took Pratt into custody and an autopsy later revealed the victim died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Pratt faces 25 more years behind bars when he is sentenced within the next few months, police say.

On Oct. 10, 2014, Pratt was released from a New Jersey prison, where he'd spent the previous three decades for the fatal shooting of Michael Anderson.

When he was 15, Anderson caught Pratt smoking marijuana with friends and confronted the boy.

During that incident, Pratt struck Anderson in the face with a lead pipe. After being hit, Anderson retreated, but hours later, Pratt knocked on his apartment's door. When he opened it, Pratt shot Anderson.

Idris said that a team of epidemiologists from the state ministry of health are yet to come up with the report on the source of the strange infection, but added that the signs and symptoms of the illness suggested Febrile Rash. “Blood samples and throat swabs from the patients and water samples from the community have been taken to the Virology Reference Laboratory"he said

He appealed to members of the public to maintain a clean environment as the government battles to stop the spread of the disease.

Kris Jenner brands Caitlyn Jenner as worst dressed at the NYFW

Kris Jenner named her ex-Husband Caitlyn Jenner the “worst dressed” of New York Fashion Week.
Jenner made the surprising admission about Caitlyn's Fashion Week looks during a recent appearance on E!’s New York Fashion Week special episode of Fashion Police on Thursday, although Kris’ apparent Caitlyn diss wasn’t actually as bad as we think.

“My worst I think is going to be Caitlyn [Jenner],” Kris said on the E! fashion show, according to People.
Kris appeared alongside regular hosts Giuliana Rancic, Brad Goreski, Melissa Rivers, and Margaret Cho this week. But it turns out that the Kardashian/Jenner’s worst dressed statement actually turned out to be a compliment to Caitlyn, who Kris married in 1991 before the two divorced last year.
“Here’s why,” Kris Jenner said, explaining her decision that she “can’t handle [Caitlyn’s] shoes with the skirt.”
“The second reason is,” Kris continued during her guest appearance on Fashion Police, “because, I really would have liked this outfit for myself and she kind of stole it. I’m a little jealous… I’m a little angry that I didn’t get that skirt to be honest.”. She added.

JK Rowling hits back at twitter trolls with Chamillionaire lines

Trolls should learn to leave billionaire British author JK Rowling alone, she seems to have the perfect response almost every time. One man called her a 'radge' with 'obscene wealth' and what did she do? Sulk and moan about online trolls? Not JK Rowling. She borrowed a line from Chammilionaire's hit song swapping 'rollin' for 'Rowlin'.

The troll wrote: "She uses her obscene wealth & lawyer droids to threaten & bully. Tell the radge to bolt", Rowling replied: "They see me Rowlin' they hatin'".

The rapper whose real name is Hakeem Seriki applauded her effort, she responded with emojis and twitter went agog.

The Philadelphia Police Department tweeted an altered picture Thursday featuring the rapper’s head atop a uniform, with an offer for West to join the force.

Here's A Devious Way To Get Workers To Exercise

Corporate wellness programs seem like a no-brainer in theory. In order to get employees to exercise more, companies can just pay them to reach a certain number of steps walked or calories burned. Right?

Not quite, suggests a new study by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania. Rather than rewarding employees with cash or perks for achieving a fitness goal, employers might consider first giving out money and then gradually taking it away from those who fail to reach their goals.
The idea of losing money for not exercising may help motivate workers, according to the study, published earlier this week in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
“We know that people are irrational, and that they respond more to loss than gains,” Mitesh Patel, one of the researchers, told HuffPost. “People want to avoid the feeling of losing something they feel they already have. That can be very motivating."
The researchers enlisted a group of 281 slightly overweight adults and instructed them to walk 7,000 steps a day. One group of participants was paid $1.40 each day they hit the goal; another was entered into a lottery to win $5 or $50 if they completed the 7,000 steps; a third group received $42 at the beginning of the month, with $1.40 deducted each day the goal was not achieved. A control group received only feedback on their exercise and no money.
The monetary incentives were offered for 13 weeks. During that time, the group whose money could be taken away actually performed better than the others -- which surprised the researchers. They also didn't expect to see such similar results between the people who got paid to exercise and the ones who didn't get paid at all.
Participants in the penalization group hit the 7,000 steps on 45 percent of the days. Those who had the possibility of a reward achieved it just 35 percent of the time, and those in the lottery group did so 36 percent of the time. The people who only got feedback hit the goal on 30 percent of the days.
As an interesting note, the participants in the loss incentive group never actually earned the $42 upfront. The researchers paid everyone with a check at the end of the month. The money used during the study was all deducted from an imaginary account, proving that just the psychological fear of losing money is pretty strong.
The researchers hope that the data will help companies develop more effective ways of getting their employees to exercise. Standard wellness programs usually take the reward approach, like offering to supplement gym memberships or giving prizes for reaching weight or blood pressure goals. But if penalizing employees makes them a little more eager to work out, why not try that?
“If we’re going to use incentives, we should think about how it’s designed and incorporate behavioral economics,” Patel said.
Nearly half of U.S. companies have adopted wellness programs, many of which hinge on outcome-based goals like losing weight or decreasing cholesterol levels. Their actual effectiveness is contested: Some studies argue that they don’t significantly improve health.
Not to mention, when employers start emphasizing the need for workers to take better care of themselves, some worry that the burden of the health care costs get shifted onto those who are less healthy and that the programs will violate employee privacy. In 2014, CVS was sued by one of its employees for allegedly making her disclose her weight and sexual activity under a health screening program or pay $600 a year if she declined.
And while incentivizing workers to get healthy has good intentions, the fundamental message that a company conveys should be that it’s encouraging a culture of healthy behavior. No one wants to be overworked, stressed and, on top of all that, penalized for not having taken enough steps in one day. That’s pretty discouraging -- and won’t solve problems either.

Nigerian troops rescue 195 hostages from Boko Haram: army

Nigerian troops have rescued 195 Boko Haram hostages and killed a number of "terrorists" in raids on villages across the restive northeast, the army said Thursday.
Troops descended on towns suspected to be controlled by the Islamist group in the state of Borno and "rescued 195 persons held hostage," it said in a statement.

"Quite a number of Boko Haram terrorists were killed," it added, while a spokesman also listed a range of equipment and livestock seized.
Photos released by the army show a modest camp with shelters made of logs and thatched grass and shacks constructed with rusted corrugated steel.
Seized equipment included two trucks, 180 motorcycles, 750 bicycles and a generator. The militants have recently been using bicycles to attack villages in the absence of better vehicles.
Army spokesman Colonel Sani Usman added they also recovered 300 cows, 200 sheep and 130 goats rustled by the insurgents.
The offensive follows a major assault against a key Boko Haram base in Nigeria by the Cameroonian army, who seized heavy machine-guns, rocket-launchers, AK-47s, grenades and training rifles.
In Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, the group has killed at least 17,000 people and made more than 2.6 million others homeless since their six-year campaign for an independent Islamic state began.
Boko Haram's continued attacks in the region come despite the government's insistence it has "technically" defeated the Islamic State group affiliate.

Nigeria: Corruption - Buhari Vows Not to Spare Anyone

President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed that he will leave no stone unturned in his efforts to rid the country of corruption.
Speaking at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday at a reception for members of the Diplomatic Corps, Buhari assured that his administration would fight corruption within the ambit of the law.

Buhari's deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, had recently disclosed that the president was under intense pressure from the elite to "cool down" on the anti-corruption war.
But Buhari explained that because pervasive corruption would make it impossible to build a stable and prosperous Nigeria, it had become necessary for his government to wage a relentless war against "the cancer of corruption".
"We are resolved to build a stable and prosperous Nigeria; a country that is inclusive of all her diverse peoples and a country that is at ease with itself. Building such a country will not be possible where corruption is pervasive. Mindful of this, it has become necessary to wage a relentless war against the cancer of corruption. So long as corruption holds center stage in the affairs of Nigeria, the country will continue to suffer incalculable harm.
"You are witnesses to the preliminary findings that have emerged in the past few weeks from our investigations into corrupt practices in different sectors of Nigeria's Public Service. I will leave no stone unturned in the efforts to rid Nigeria of corruption. I must however, add that in doing this, we shall operate within the ambit of the law.
"In a similar fight in the past, and armed with the might of military muscle, I led a government that required persons presumed to be corrupt to prove their innocence. Today, as committed democrats, and in a culture of deepening democracy, we respect the law that presumes all persons innocent until they are proven to be guilty.
"Nigeria has no choice, nor can the country afford to be an island in itself. Against this backdrop therefore, since my assumption of office, I have demonstrated my commitment to interact with my colleagues in Nigeria's neighbours and beyond. This is consistent with the pledge that I made at my inauguration to steer the affairs of the country in a manner that will allow us to play the role that is expected of us.
"It is for this reason, that the Foreign Policy vision which we are currently pursuing is anchored on meaningful engagement with our neighbors, the African continent and the world at large", Buhari stated.
The president also said that unlike before he assumed office when Boko Haram insurgents were fully in control of 14 local governments in the northeast; they held no territory in the country today.
According to him, the insurgents are currently hiding in Sambisa forest in Borno State and occasionally undertake cowardly attacks on innocent citizens in soft targets.
