Adam Slater - a registered sex offender allegedly stabbed his pregnant wife before kidnapping and throwing off one-year-old daughter over a cliff.
The 49-year-old was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the incident.
The incidence unfolded when police officers were called on the morning of May 6 following reports domestic violence involving stabbing at a parking lot in Indian Wells.
At the scene a pregnant lady, believed to be Slater's wife, was found with multiple injuries and taken to hospital.
Around 45 minutes later, officers were called to a crash scene involving a car that Slater fled in and another supposed good Samaritan he'd knifed - after he tried assisting a young girl from the crash, according to a Riverside County Sheriff's department press release.
Slater then snatched the girl from the man before "throwing her over a steep cliff into a ravine," according to Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Ben Ramirez.
He fled the scene into the canyon, before he was located and arrested.
Officers found the one-year-old girl, who was pronounced dead at the scene and later identified her as his daughter.
Slater was taken to hospital for injuries related to the crash and remains behind bars in Riverside County Jail on $1 million bail.
Slater also faces a sentence-enhancing allegation of using a knife in the commission of a murder, along with a special circumstance allegation of committing a murder during the commission of a kidnapping, which makes him eligible for the death penalty if the District Attorney's Office decides to pursue it.
He also faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder following a series of incidents in Palm Desert, California.
The investigation remains ongoing.
