Tremendous flooding in Kerala, a southern India state claimed nothing less than 75 lives due to torrentuous raining... The rising death toll is dwarfed by the forecast of heavier rain in coming days.
P.H. Kurian, State Relief Commissioner, said the biggest loss Thursday when 10 people died in a landslide.
Fisher men have been asked to help with rescue efforts as the government distributes boats across the state to reach thousands of people stranded by floodwater. - He added.
Officials announced a red alert has been issued in the state, the highest level, signifying the degree of the disaster which has forced tens of thousands of people to live in relief camps.
Railway and road transport has all been halted with railway tracks and roads submerged under water. Operations are suspended at the international airport in the city of Kochi due to flooding.
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy rainfall in the state for the next four days requiring the rescue teams to be quick with rescue and evacuate the epicenter as coming rain will be heavier and could be dangerous even for rescuers.
