Coconut oil is one of the latest trend for beauty enthusiasts; hair, skin, and nutrition enthusiasts all agree it as a healthy fat. But to medical professor, Dr Karin Michels, at Harvard University (Harvard’s School of Public Health), the coconut oil is actually "one of the worst foods you can eat".
The medical professor who also heads the tumour research centre at the University of Freiburg says the oil is "pure poison" and claims it is more likely to clog arteries than lard (Pig fat) during a lecture titled "Coconut Oil and other Nutritional Errors" in Germany last month.
The lecture widely shared by enthusiasts that coconut oil is not as healthy as the public was initially made to believe. She lectured that "coconut oil is pure poison," and "it is one of the worst foods you can eat". The professor said the oil is worse than lard – made from pig fat – yet 70% of Americans believed it to be one of the healthiest oils around.
Dr Michels’ lecture follows a move by the American Heart Association (AHA) to update its guidelines, which recommend that people avoid the saturated fatty acids found in coconut oil.
According to Michels, coconut oil is more dangerous than lard because it almost exclusively contains saturated fatty acids, ones that can clog the coronary arteries. You can identify fats that contain large quantities of saturated fatty acids by checking to see whether they remain solid at room temperature, as is the case with butter or lard. Based on the fact that they contain a lot of unsaturated fatty acids, experts suggest olive or rapeseed oil as an alternative.
