8.2 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE STRIKES IN THE PACIFIC NEAR FIJI AND TONGA

According to the United States Geological Survey, a powerful magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck off Ndoi Island on Sunday. The US Geological Survey reports the depth of the tremor to be about 558.6km (346.7 miles) below the earth which dampened the shaking at the surface.
The US Tsunami Warning Center also confirmed that the depth of the powerful quake averted a possible tsunami and tremendous damages to properties and lives.

The epicenter was located 167 miles (270 km) east of Levuka in Fiji and 275 miles (443 km) west of Neiafu in Tonga.
The area is located on the earthquake-prone Ring of Fire.
