Ed Sheeran hits out at anti-abortion campaigners for using his song 'small bump' without consent.
In a statement released on his Instagram stories, he wrote:
'Small bump' was played by anti-abortion activists at a campaign in Dublin ahead of a referendum vote in Ireland to repeal the eighth amendment to its constitution.
The controversial amendment, introduced in 1983 bans abortion in almost all cases, and asserts:
In a statement released on his Instagram stories, he wrote:
"I’ve been informed that my song Small Bump is being used to promote the Pro-Life campaign, and I feel it’s important to let you know I have not given approval for this use, and it does not reflect what the song is about."Sheeran revealed during an interview that he wrote the song about a friend who lost a child, with a line from the song's lyrics “Cause you were just a small bump unborn for four months then torn from life” also discusses the trauma of experiencing a miscarriage.

The controversial amendment, introduced in 1983 bans abortion in almost all cases, and asserts:
"The State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and, with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right."Ireland will vote on 25 May but continue to see mixed reactions following Sheerans clap back at the campaigners.
Guys Ed Sheeran’s song Small Bump is about his friend that sadly lost her baby due to a miscarriage 5 months into her pregnancy, NOT because of an abortion. Do your research. I can’t believe that pro life are using his song without his permission... and it’s not even about that.— sophie // exams!! ♡ (@mercyydun) May 18, 2018
Small Bump is not about pro life or abortion rights. It is about losing a child to miscarriage. pic.twitter.com/J3BuOhAHe6— Aysha (@Aysha1001) May 19, 2018
I can’t believe the pro life side are using Small Bump by Ed Sheehan for their campaign and he had to publicly state that they missed the point of the song and he doesn’t even endorse it 🙄🙄🙄🙄— Sinéad (@SayHiSinead) May 18, 2018
Um, exscuse me, @edsheeran? You cannot write a song like "Small Bump" and then act shocked when the #ProLife movement uses it in campaigns. You ran that risk when you humanized baby humans. #votenotoabortion #savethe8th pic.twitter.com/yDQ12Sx8uN— Hazel (@RoseHazel12) May 18, 2018
A truck driving around Celbridge with ‘Vote No’ on the side playing Small Bump by Ed Sheeran and Goo Goo Dolls Iris🤦🏼♂️ actually embarrassing😠— Daniel O'Reilly (@DanielOReilly4) May 9, 2018
@StuartCampPro Ed Sheeran's super fans spot that his song lyrics are being deliberately used to promote the killing of a child, outside his concert in Dublin making it appear that he is advocating a yes vote in the referendum! https://t.co/K2DULRcb5x— Ciara Sherlock (@sherlockciara) May 16, 2018
