Rapinoe has however admitted the move was intentional. Indeed, it's in support for Colin Kaepernick who has sat during the U.S national anthem in protest against racial injustice in the U.S.

A bittered police union also threatened to stop staffing the 49ers football games if the team doesn't take action against Kaepernick.

Shaun King, a prominent Black Lives Matter activist praised Rapinoe, who is Caucasian for kneeling.
He tweeted:
"I actually think what [Rapinoe] did tonight was HUGE. A pivotal step. It shows this protest has not only crossed sports, but culture as well."
