All experts agree walking is better than no exercise, but a combination of aerobic-type (running, cycling, swimming) and strength-type exercise (lifting weights or bodyweight exercises) should be included to counter the losses of muscle strength/power and bone density as we age.

One expert believes walking alone is not enough to provide all the aspects of health-promoting effects of exercise for most people, though it may provide a platform to more intense exercise.

Another expert on the advantages of walking - it depends on how long you walk, how fast you walk, walking down a slope or up a hill. 5 km/hour, or 3.1 mph is considered the moderate pace at which following benefits could be achieved; reduced risk of heart disease, excess weight and obesity, type 2 diabetes, depression and anxiety, osteoporosis, many cancers and socially - meeting people.

Yet another advises walking at a speed of 4-6 km/h (2.5-3.7 mph) for half an hour per day is enough as moderate walk requires about three times your resting metabolic rate.
