Woman who paid fellow shopper's £22 bill rewarded with £8,000 painting as a thank you

A woman, 29 year old Pamela Philip, who generously paid a fellow customer’s £22 shopping bill was surprised and shocked when he rewarded her kindness with an £8,000 painting. Philip was shocked when she discovered that the man she helped was a famous “sleepwalking artist”, who was so moved by her random act of kindness he decided to gift her with one of his works of art.

Pamela said she was behind a flustered customer, who had lost his wallet, in the queue at Tesco so decided to help him out by paying his £22 bill for him. She said the man insisted on repaying her for her generosity and convinced her to give him her address.

She gave it to him and forgot all about the incident. However, one month later she received a package in the post. Inside the package was a cheque for £22 and a painting with a certificate of authenticity signed by 41 year old artist Lee Hadwin who only draws when he's asleep but can never draw when awake.

She didn't know who Hadwin was so she decided to investigate. That was when she discovered the man she encountered at Tesco was Mr Hadwin, a professional artist who does all his work while sleeping, and the painting of a red cross on a solid black background is worth £7,850.

She said:
“I still can’t believe it, I’m in shock. I never expected to hear from him again. “When he asked for my address I kept saying ‘no don’t worry about it, it’s nothing’ because £22 is nothing really. “I had forgotten all about it. I think it’s quite a rare thing for people to do these days.
I gave the money without expecting anything back. “If his shopping had been £100 I wouldn’t have offered, but £22 isn’t much so I was happy to help.”

FOOTBALL: OFFICIAL: MANCHESTER UNITED FC APPOINTS JOSE MOURINHO AS MANAGER

Jose Mourinho has been appointed as the new manager of Manchester United, the club has confirmed.

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss has been handed a three-year deal at Old Trafford, ending months of speculation linking him to the United job.

The 53-year-old replaces Louis van Gaal, who was sacked on Monday despite leading the club to their first FA Cup win in 12 years at the weekend.
Announcing the appointment, Ed Woodward said:

“José is quite simply the best manager in the game today. He has won trophies and inspired players in countries across Europe and, of course, he knows the Premier League very well, having won three titles here.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome him to Manchester United. His track record of success is ideal to take the Club forward.”
Mourinho has been an open admirer of Manchester United for many years and has been expected to replace Van Gaal since his sacking by Chelsea in December 2015.

“To become Manchester United manager is a special honour in the game," the Portuguese said. "It is a club known and admired throughout the world. There is a mystique and a romance about it which no other club can match.
“I have always felt an affinity with Old Trafford; it has hosted some important memories for me in my career and I have always enjoyed a rapport with the United fans. I’m looking forward to being their manager and enjoying their magnificent support in the coming years.”
Mourinho has eight league titles to his name from his days with Porto, Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid, including three Premier League triumphs.

But United have not finished higher than fourth in the three years since Sir Alex Ferguson retired after collecting 13 league crowns in his 26-year reign.

They finished in fifth place in 2015-16, prompting the decision to dismiss Van Gaal and replace him with his former Barcelona coaching protege.

The club have yet to confirm whether assistant manager Ryan Giggs will remain as part of Mourinho's backroom staff.

CRUELTY: TWO WHITE LIONS KILLED BUT YOU CAN'T GUESS WHY...

Two white lions held in captivity on a farm in Limpopo, South Africa have been poisoned by poachers who cut off their heads and paws for use. The lions are believed to have been targeted as part of a multi-killing, where animal body parts are used for healing in black magic rituals.

Local police said they had picked up a number of suspects relating to the killing near the Stockpoort border crossing with Botswana and investigation is underway.

It has been estimated that 8,000 lions are bred in captivity in South Africa.
According to a source: 'The lions are often sold to facilities which offer walking experiences with lions. The final journey for most of these hand-reared lions is as a trophy to be mounted on a hunter's wall.'

1000 lions are killed annually in South Africa by rich tourists who pay $5,400 (£3,500) to $48,000 (£31,000), depending on size and condition.

FOOTBALL: UNITED KINGDOM: HODGSON PRAISES FA PLANS TO SCRAP CUP REPLAYS (PHOTOS)

England manager Roy Hodgson praised the decision to scrap FA Cup replays from the quarter-finals onwards as the first step towards a winter break.
Top-flight English clubs are still competing through a hectic festive period while many others, including the Bundesliga, enjoy time off.

The FA announced on Thursday replays would no longer be played in the FA Cup from the last eight onwards.

That decision was applauded by Hodgson, who said it was a step in the right direction.
"It is done to maybe provide that elusive winter break. The break is nothing other than wanting to freshen our minds up," he said.
"There is no doubt that it is a very positive move, because those replays have often been one of the stumbling blocks to people suggesting we can't have a break."

Hodgson praised the Premier League and FA over their discussions for a potential break, saying replays had for so long been the problem.

"There's been no doubt that one of the stumbling blocks has often been 'hold on, you have all of these replays and you're asking us to cut our season down'," he said.
Hodgson and England are preparing for friendlies against Australia and Portugal ahead of Euro 2016.

FOOTBALL: FRANCE: DESCHAMPS TO TAKE LEGAL ACTION AGAINST CANTONA BECAUSE OF...

Didier Deschamps' lawyer has confirmed the France coach will pursue legal action against Eric Cantona after the former Manchester United forward suggested Hatem Ben Arfa and Karim Benzema had been omitted from Les Bleus' squad for Euro 2016 due to their African heritage.

Benzema has been the subject of a legal investigation into an alleged plot to blackmail fellow international Mathieu Valbuena, resulting in him being suspended from international football since December.
Meanwhile, former Newcastle United playmaker Ben Arfa is set to miss out despite scoring 17 Ligue 1 goals to fire Nice to fourth place.

Asked whether he thought Deschamps' decision was motivated by discrimination, Cantona told the Guardian: "Maybe no, but maybe yes. Why not?
"One thing is for sure – Benzema and Ben Arfa are two of the best players in France and will not play the European Championship. And for sure, Benzema and Ben Arfa, their origins are north African. So, the debate is open."

The France Football Federation and Deschamps did not respond to Cantona's comments when contacted by Perform, but the coach's lawyer Carlos Brusa confirmed toL'Equipe that his client was going to take the matter further.
Brusa said: "I will initiate action before the civil and criminal courts to punish these slanderous and defamatory comments that infringe impermissibly on Mr Deschamps' integrity."
