RE:China Is In Danger Of Repeating Japan's Mistake In Policy Debate

As the New Year opens, the world is being rattled by developments in China’s currency and stock markets. The Financial Times declares this the “Worst start to market year in two decades.”
Many commentators, including myself, have already pointed out the underlying problems that China faces and the challenges for its policymakers. The problems are indeed deep-rooted in the economy, and it is essential for the Chinese authorities to engage in a proper set of policy initiatives.

However, a disturbing trend has emerged from the current economic policy discussions in China. President Xi Jinping has recently begun to emphasize the importance of supply side structural reforms, according to The Economist (“Reagan’s Chinese Echo”). Economists and policy pundits have since fallen in line coming up with slogans to fit in with the official policy line. The Economist relayed the words of Chen Changsheng from the Development Research Center, a government think-tank: “We can no longer delay the zombie corporations…taking painkillers and performing transfusions is not enough. We need the determination to carry out surgery.”

CANADA: Denies Refugee Status To Black American Fleeing Police Violence

Canada has rejected the application of an African-American who applied for refugee status on the grounds he was facing police racism and brutality in the United States.

Kyle Lydell Canty’s application was denied by Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board in December and he is now back in the U.S., Vice News reported Saturday. Canty originally crossed the border into British Columbia in September as a tourist, then opted to stay and apply for refugee status.
Ron Yamauchi, an IRB board member who wrote the decision, acknowledged that black people in the U.S. are “stopped and questioned by police at the highest rate compared to other racial groups,” the CBC reported. But the decision argued that Canty personally did not have a “well-founded” fear of persecution in his home country.

A hunter killed a mountain lion...and saw a deformity

A hunter in Idaho who killed a mountain lion involved in an attack on a dog discovered the lion had a beastly deformity. A set of fangs and whiskers were growing out of its head. A pic released Thursday by Idaho Fish and Game shows the big cat had another set of fully-formed teeth and whiskers growing out of the top of its head.

Wildlife officials say they have never seen a deformity like that but have offered up several theories. One explanation put forth is that it may be a conjoined that died in the womb and its remnants merged into the other twin. Another explanation is a so-called "teratoma" tumor.

'Nigeria has never seen this type of corruption being exposed before' - Soyinka

Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka says the current anti-corruption fight by the federal government has revealed an unprecedented level of corruption that has never been recorded in Nigeria before. Soyinka said this when the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, paid him a courtesy visit at his home in Lagos today January 9th.

"We have not had a case where it had been alleged and increasingly proven that money supposed to be spent on defending ourselves, our nation, our neighbourhood, has been shared among individuals. We never had experience where we were in a state of critical emergency where children are being kidnapped under our noses.
