EXILED CATALAN LEADER CARLES PUIGDEMONT ARRESTED IN GERMANY ON CLAIMS OF REBELLION AGAINST THE SPANISH GOVERNMENT

Four months after he fled Spain fearing arrest for his role in organizing an "illegal" referendum on secession, Carles Puigdemont, was arrested in Germany. He faces more than 20 years in prison if he's extradited to Spain.

Four months after he fled Spain fearing arrest for his role in organizing an "illegal" referendum on secession, Carles Puigdemont, was arrested in Germany. He faces more than 20 years in prison if he's extradited to Spain.

Fearing arrest, Puigdemont, 55, left Finland for Germany where he was subsequently detained on a European Arrest Warrant, issued by the Spainish government.

Germany BKA federal police were informed by Spanish intelligence that Puigdemont was on his way to Germany via Denmark, this according to German magazine Focus.
Puigdemont made it clear he'll fight the extradition process from Belgium.

On Saturday the speaker of the Catalan parliament in Barcelona called for an alliance against Madrid, describing the spate of legal actions as an "attack on the heart of democracy."

Arrest warrant is issued for 12 Catalan leaders including Puigdemont.
