UNITED KINGDOM: Ibori London Trial; Thursday's Court Proceedings

Counsel to Chief James Onanefe Ibori, Thursday May 19, 2016 told the Southwark Court, London that there may be no fair trial in the confiscation hearing of James Ibori that is due to start in June at a Southwark Crown Court in London.

According to a press statement signed by Ibori's Media Assistant, Tony Eluemunor, Ibori's lawyer said this during Thursday's preliminary hearing preparatory to the confiscation trial against Ibori that is due to start in June.

The lawyer, Mr. Ivan Krolic, said that there are established cases of corruption against the police and the crown prosecution counsels who investigated Ibori. This, he said, has led to dropping every member of entire Police and Crown Prosecution teams that investigated Ibori and his associates.

Mr. Krolic notified the court that following the revelation that the Police involved in investigating Ibori for money laundry were themselves involved in corruption, and were knowingly covered up by the Crown Prosecution, the integrity of the entire process has been put in doubt. He said: “there are cases of abuse of process against the crown prosecution to deliberately manipulate the process to gain undue advantage and inflate the confiscation figure which will require a stay of proceeding in this case to allow for the abuse of process to be dealt with”.
The trial Judge, His Honour Tomlinson, acknowledging the precarious situation of the Ibori case, especially the serious allegations of police corruption which has led the Police authority itself acknowledged the corruption charges and as a result to set up a review of the process and corruption allegations against its officers, the Judge, noted “there are a lot of perceptions and it is inevitable that the team involved in the investigation and prosecution be changed following these allegations”.

Putting the Judge on notice should the confiscation trial begin as scheduled while the application for crown and police abuse of process is held, Mr Krolic said “our argument is that the whole process is infected and it will be wrong for the confiscation hearing to continue...the allegation is that the crown consistently and deliberately manipulated the system and forced James Ibori to plead guilty and inflate the figures (of the money involved) in the light of the serious allegation of police corruption in this case”.
His Honour Tomlinson replied: “I have an obligation to keep an open mind and keep this under constant review”, and having also read the statement witness of James Ibori's former Defence Counsel, Mr Nicholas Purnell QC, that the Crown Counsels misled him to cause his client, James Ibori, to plead guilty, there are potentials in the statements”. That notwithstanding, the June start date of the Confiscation hearing may hold though he alerted that “a number of potential hazards to this proceedings have been flagged off”.
Meanwhile, the confiscation hearing is due to start on 6th June at Southwark Crown in London.

Egyptian military discovers wreckage of flight #MS804 & passengers belongings north of Alexandria

The spokesperson for Egypt's military said on Friday morning that passengers belongings and wreckage from crashed EgyptAir flight MS804 had been found north of Alexandria.

The plane was en route to Cairo from Charle de Gaulle Airport in Paris on Wednesday when it disappeared from radar over the Mediterranean Sea, shortly after entering Egyptian airspace.

The military said in a statement that it detected parts of debris and some of the passengers’ belongings while searching for the aircraft's black box, according to Reuters.

The army's statement, posted on its official Facebook page, adds that the search operation is under way, involving naval vessels and military aircraft.

President Adbel Fattah al-Sisi expressed his condolences to families of those on board, signifying that it is considered unlikely that any of the people on board survived.

"The presidency, with utmost sadness and regret, mourns the victims on aboard the EgyptAir flight who were killed after the plane crashed in the Mediterranean on its way back to Cairo from Paris," a statement from Sisi's office was quoted by Reuters as saying.

FOOTBALL: UNITED KINGDOM: Winning the F.A Cup is more important than qualifying for Champions League - Man U coach Van gaal

Britain's biggest club Manchester United missed out on the top four this season and entry into next season's Champions League, but Louis Van Gaal now says winning the FA Cup would be a bigger achievement.
Errrm, here at Old Trafford all the cups are important @ Mr. LvG
Van Gaal despite having an underwhelming season, with his job constantly linked to Jose Mourinho has a chance to win the F.A cup on Saturday, as Man U tackle sCrystal palace in Wembley.

“I think the interest of the club is much more important and the interest of the fans is more important than those of the manager,” said Van Gaal during his pre-match press conference according to Manutd.com.

“Of course, you have your own aims and that's one of the aims I have had always, so it's always exciting when you are so close, but close is not enough – you have to win it. A club like Manchester United needs silverware.

“I have read that the last FA Cup was 2004 so it's a long time ago, so also for Manchester United it's a big title I think, especially as it was a long time ago.

“We are very close, but still you have nothing when you don't win. So it's always a final you cannot predict.”

“I think it is always important,” said Van Gaal. “When you win silverware, it's important for the players, because a qualification is not a title.

“A title is the FA Cup or championship, because they can look and hold the trophy, so that's an exciting moment also. We are playing in the most prestigious temple in England, so everything has confirmed how important this trophy is.

“It is a while since we won anything, so it's very good if we win something. We have played four matches of the six away, so I think we deserve something also, I think.”
