Nigeria: All Banks To Commence Zero CoT

Effective from last week Friday, January 1, 2016, Nigerian banks are expected to charge nothing as Commission on Turnover (CoT) according to the gradual phase out plan of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The CBN in April 2013 had revised the guidelines on bank charges, introducing the gradual phasing out of commission on turnover.

The revised guideline had introduced a gradual reduction of CoT from N5 per mile (per N1000) in early 2013 to N3 per mille or N1000, N2 per N1000 in 2014 and is to be N1 per N1000 in 2015 and finally phased out effective January 1, 2016.

Although some banks had stopped charging CoT, others still charge and in some cases above the stipulated N1 per mille which it was last year. Also for some banks, the amount charged as CoT depends on the customers’ relationship and ability to haggle with the bank.

Last year, the apex bank had ordered deposit money banks to refund illegal fees charged customers over a period of one year, giving them 30 days to refund the excess charges or face severe penalties. Specifically, the central bank said some banks had been overcharging customers on the Commission on Turnover while some lenders had also imposed illegal maintenance fees on the CoT-free accounts.

Theft of Lincoln’s hand baffles Illinois Museum

Someone stole Abraham Lincoln’s hand. The crime had no witnesses. There are no suspects. The police are not even certain when the hand disappeared.

About all anyone knows is that a plaster sculpture of the 16th president’s hand, proudly displayed for years at the Kankakee County Museum, has been missing from its shelf since at least Dec. 11.
Any art theft would be jarring in Kankakee, a working-class city about an hour’s drive south of Chicago, but because of its connection to Lincoln, the loss of this sculpture has touched a nerve there.

Tamir Rice: The 12 Year Old killed By Police

A Cleveland grand jury has declined to bring criminal charges against Timothy Loehmann and Frank Garmback, the police officers who killed 12-year-old Tamir Rice after mistaking his gun replica for a real weapon.

In a statement after the November 2014 shooting, police said, “The suspect did not comply with officers’ orders and reached to his waistband for the gun.” Video puts doubt on that claim. In the infamous surveillance video of the shooting, Garmback arrives on the scene driving a police cruiser. As the car arrives, Loehmann exits the vehicle and shoots, fatally wounding Rice. The whole event took seconds, and, with no audio, there’s no indication the officers warned Rice or gave him a chance to respond.

Re:Tips for Going Back to Work After Divorce.

I can't count the number of women I know who were stay-at-home moms when they were married, and for financial reasons had to go back to work after divorce. That includes me, and I can say firsthand how unbelievably difficult the transition was.
So, how do you land a job you love that also fits your single mom lifestyle? It's not easy, but it is certainly doable! Here are eight job searching tips I wish I could have told myself as a mom going back to work after divorce.

1. Get help writing your resume. How many years has it been since you put together a resume? For me it had been over a decade. Get some help with it. Ask people who work if you can see their resumes to get an idea of how to write yours. Have friends and professionals edit it for you and give you feedback.
2. Consider working with a job coach to help you decide what jobs to go after. Probably the hardest thing about going back to work after divorce is figuring out what jobs to go after. Lots of things have changed since you left your last job, and most of the job descriptions are confusing. What do you want to do? What are you qualified to do? What hours can you work? How much do these jobs pay? Job coaches work with you to determine the right career fit and explain and put those wordy and complicated job descriptions into plain English!

New York governor orders officials to force homeless into shelters during freezing weather

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order on Sunday requiring local officials throughout the state to force the homeless into shelters when temperatures dip below freezing, and vowed to defend the edict if challenged in court.
The order, which goes into effect on Tuesday, requires social service agencies and police to move homeless individuals into shelters, against their will if necessary, when the temperature is at or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (O degrees Celsius).
"Our state, which has a beautiful tradition of social progress and community, should not leave anyone outside in freezing temperatures. That’s called basic humanity," Cuomo said during an interview on New York City news channel NY1.

New York and other big U.S. cities have long wrestled with the dilemma of dealing with homeless people who refuse to be taken to shelters, even in the most bitter cold. Many of them fear falling victim to crime in the shelters.
The order also requires shelters to extend hours of operation to ensure that homeless people can stay inside whenever there is "inclement winter weather which can cause hypothermia, serious injury and death."

Anti-Government Protest in Oregon

The occupiers were led by Ammon Bundy, whose father, Cliven Bundy, made national headlines for a tense encounter with law enforcement in a similar dispute in 2014.

While news organizations were initially using #OregonUnderAttack to talk about the standoff, Twitter users started using some less-neutral terms to refer to the "militia." The primary hashtag Twitter users began employing was #YallQaeda, clearly likening the Oregon group to Al Qaeda.
While #YallQaeda has been used intermittently since at least 2011 to refer to various right-wing, Tea Party, or other antigovernment groups, it caught fire with users commenting on the Oregon standoff. It is currently trending with over 35,000 tweets so far.

Lenovo's Windows Tablet Has a Module For Every Need.

People have been heralding the rise of the tablet-laptop hybrid for years now, but it’s only recently that real contenders have started popping up. The Surface Pro rules the roost for the time being, but Lenovo’s combination of competitive pricing, a reputation for rock-solid keyboards, and those added extras could make things interesting. Pricing starts at $900 for the tablet+keyboard, with the projector module running $279, and both others for $149 apiece, all available next month.

2016 NFL Wild Card And Divisional Playoff Schedule.

The NFL’s playoff picture is finally in focus. The 2015 regular season is in the books after Sunday’s play, and with it, the march toward who will be crowned champion in Super Bowl 50 can begin in earnest.
Tonight, Commissioner Roger Goodell announced the schedule of sites, dates and times for the National Football League Wild Card Playoffs on January 9-10 and Divisional Playoffs on January 16-17.

Some interesting tidbits regarding the games on Sunday, and the playoffs…
  • The Seahawks at Vikings will be first playoff game played outdoors in Minneapolis since 1976.
  • According to the NFL,  four teams that missed the postseason in 2014 – Kansas City (11-5), Minnesota (10-5), Houston (9-7) and Washington (9-7) – advanced to the 2015 playoffs. Since the 12-team playoff format was adopted in 1990, at least four teams have qualified for the playoffs in every season that were not in the postseason the year before.
  • According to the NFL, Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson threw three touchdowns and no interceptions in the Seahawks’ win at Arizona.
